First of all, I think it is absolutely ridiculous that an adult was the orchestrator of the whole hoax. Its one thing to take your child’s side in a little spat with their friends, but it’s a whole different thing to go to lengths Lori Drew did when her daughter was fighting with one of her friends. To condone the behavior of your child harassing another child is pretty despicable, but to get involved and plot against a 13 year old girl in hopes of emotionally destroying her, there should be some serious consequences and repercussions for those actions. Unfortunately, this case isn’t so black and white, most people including myself would believe that Lori Drew is responsible for the subsequent suicide her little online prank caused. While the authorities believe morally this woman is in the wrong, they are having a tough time sticking her with any felony charges for her actions. Because of the gray area this falls in, a woman who was responsible for driving an unstable 13 year old to commit suicide will probably walk free after a short time in jail. This little stunt completely destroyed a family, the suicide left the parents of Megan so distraught, and the stress it put on their marriage eventually took its toll leading to their divorce. It just stuns me to think that the people who were responsible for causing all this damage are basically getting a slap on the wrist and will go on to enjoy the rest of their lives. Even more disgusting are the quotes you read from the Drew family stating that they basically have no remorse for what they did. I’m sure that there are many circumstances where it is a crime to harass an unstable child, leading them to take their own life, it’s astounding to me that this technically isn’t one of those cases.
