What I Think of the Legal System - Week 3
Wednesday, July 29, 2009
Personally I think that the legal system is necessary in this day and age. Unfortunately there are people in this world who refuse to play by society's "rules" and there are people who take this to the extreme. Now even though I believe that our legal system is necessary, I also believe that there are too many small offenses that have a tendency to clog our system and waste a lot of time and money. No system will ever be perfect in this sense, and I personally don't have the answer when it comes to making this system better. I merely live my life day by day trying to avoid our legal system any way possible. I think the government in general has too much bearing on our lives as individuals, I think there are many issues in this country today in which it should be left up to the individual to decided whether its right or wrong. For example, I think that all drugs should be made legal and it should be a matter of personal responsibility, not a matter of law. If a person decides to be addicted to drugs, and is able to buy those drugs on the open market like alcohol, tobacco, or pharmaceuticals, it would reduce the huge number of subsequent drug related crimes. I think it's an issue of personal responsibility and not something the law should have any bearing over, besides making rules and regulations like they do for alcohol or pharmaceuticals. And luckily there are already agencies in place to do so. "The federal agency responsible for the safety of food and drugs sold in the United States is the Food and Drug Administration. The FDA requires that all drugs sold be thoroughly tested to ensure that they are both safe and effective." (Essentials of Business Law, A. Liuzzo, page 473) In short I believe there need to be rules and laws in place for everyone to abide by, but personally I think the government has a little more control over individuals than necessary. Let's put an end to the "Nanny State" and give true freedom to the people of this country.
