What’s the problem with SPAM?

Wednesday, September 2, 2009

The fundamental problem with SPAM is that the recipients are receiving an un-solicited communication with the intent of selling a product and the recipient has no choice to “opt-out”. Unfortunately in this day and age an “un-solicited” sales pitch is virtually unavoidable. From direct mail marketing, phone solicitations, and email SPAM we are being hit from all angles. This subject hits close to home for me, because in the early days of the internet I was responsible for sending out similar un-solicited emails. When I was 14 years old, a friend of mine showed me a way to make $1,500 a week without lifting a finger. I gave it a shot for about a month or two before I threw in the towel, although I made a little money off this venture, my checks paled in comparison to the checks some of my friends were receiving. This was around the same time when spamming was deemed illegal and internet service providers were cracking down, making spamming a more complicated (and illegal) process. That’s about the time when spamming lost its luster to me, and the effort and headache involved seemed to outweigh the return I was getting. Having these prior experiences on this subject matter skewed my perception of the spam I was receiving in my personal inbox. It led me to believe that I was fair game because I had an email account. This was only momentary, eventually it seemed like the amount of spam people I was receiving on a daily basis was growing at an exponential rate. It started looking like spammers were pushing this illegal industry way too far! It greatly exceeded any expectation I ever had for it, and seemingly took on a life of its own. Now I’m just like every other internet user, sifting through my overflowing junk box to see if it accidently caught something I was expecting. I just don’t let the frustration bother me as much as some people do, I understand that there will always be illegal industries that impede on our daily lives as much as were willing to allow them.
